The Wisdom of the Ant

Scientists uncovered a remarkable strategy hidden in the tiny world of ants. After gathering seeds and grain for food, ants carry them underground and deliberately split them in two. Why? Because a seed cut in half cannot sprout, even under perfect growing conditions. The ants are preventing their food supply from turning into plants. It makes sense why we don't see vegetative growth in ant mounds.

But the real surprise came with coriander seeds. Researchers watched as ants didn’t just cut these in half... they cut them into four equal parts. Further investigation revealed why. Coriander seeds can still germinate when cut in half, but they cannot sprout when split into four.

How did ants “know” that?

There was no trial and error… no experimentation… no evolutionary guesswork.

It was precisepurposeful behavior, already built into them from the beginning.

Scripture gives a clear reason for this kind of wisdom:

Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise (Proverbs 6:6).
The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer (Proverbs 30:25).

Researchers have also discovered that ants don’t simply collect seeds... they store and protect them with remarkable accuracy:

  • They adjust seed storage locations depending on humidity.
  • If the nest gets too humid, they move the seeds higher so they do not mold.
  • If the air gets too dry, they move them deeper underground to preserve them.
  • They even separate damaged seeds from healthy ones, like farmers grading harvest.

This behavior resembles food storage laws humans didn’t figure out for thousands of years... yet ants were “doing it” perfectly from the beginning.

That’s not blind instinct.

That’s built-in design, authored by a Creator who gave wisdom even to the smallest creature.

Notice Solomon said, consider her ways.”

Why “her”? You can Google it and learn why. Modern science now confirms that all worker ants are female. They do all the labor... collecting food, nursing larvae, and maintaining the nest. The queen is also female, and male ants only exist briefly to mate... then they die.

Think about it...

When Solomon wrote Proverbs 6:6, there was no Google, no microscope, no research labs.

So how did he know all worker ants were female?

Scripture gives the answer:

And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding… For he was wiser than all men… and his fame was in all nations round about (1 Kings 4:29-31).

Solomon didn’t guess.

He was guided by the Holy Spirit... just like all biblical writers:

…holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).

The behavior of ants is not random. It is not luck. It is not evolution. It is evidence... engraved into nature by the Creator.

Even the smallest creature testifies of His wisdom.

But while the ant obeys its built-in design… mankind... with far greater knowledge... often chooses to ignore his Creator.

God warns that rejection of Him is not a matter of intelligence, but rebellion of the heart.

And so, this simple observation from nature points us to a hard but truthful conclusion, written by David:

The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God" (Psalm 14:1).

God Bless You!
